Our economic model isn’t working. An economy anchored in systemic racism, the privatization of resources, and worker exploitation will never guarantee that all people have what they need. The best way to create a safe, enjoyable city to live in is to ensure all people have access to the resources they need to live with dignity. The COVID-19 pandemic has made this reality visible by wreaking havoc on workers and small businesses all across the district, but we can build a solidarity economy. With the proper leadership, we can rearrange our values and put people over profit, protect workers, democratize workplaces, and guarantee sustainable livelihoods so families can thrive rather than just survive paycheck to paycheck.

  • Pilot a Universal Basic Income Program

    In 2022, in partnership with the Office of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion, my office convened a cross-sector working group to collectively create a proposal for a basic income in the City of Boston. Our working group has finalized a proposal for the Mayor, and our office will continue to steward this forward in 2023.

  • Increased Funding for Youth Jobs

    As an elected official, I had the opportunity to get us closer than we have ever been to a fully-funded youth jobs program in the city of Boston. Thanks to the love, labor, and commitment of young people across two generations and in honor of all the young people and organizers we lost along the way, we were able to secure $6 million or a 63% increase in FY23 for an expanded summer youth jobs program in the City.

  • Strengthened Gig-Worker Protections

    I, alongside other women and elected officials across the state, passed a resolution urging the Massachusetts Legislature to oppose H.1234 and the proposed 2022 State ballot initiative, which asked Massachusetts legislators and voters to grant Uber and Lyft exemption from paying into Social Security and unemployment. H.1234 would have excluded app-based workers, such as drivers for Uber, Lyft, and Doordash, from protections against racial discrimination and sexual harassment and would have left Uber and Lyft drivers out of critical workers' benefits. We paired up with Mass is Not for Sale, a statewide coalition of labor leaders, drivers, and organizers to win the fight against Uber and Lyft!
